Intro to Snow Travel
Overview:
Join our experienced guides to take the first step towards learning to travel safely in snow covered environments, especially in firm and icy conditions. You will learn to be comfortable in various snow conditions and terrain, when to switch to crampon use and how to belay with an ice axe while applying different crampon techniques. We will teach you how to self arrest with an ice axe to increase your safety and be prepared. The class will take place in the San Gabriel mountains. This is an excellent start to feel more confident and safely travel the mountains.

• Ice axe sizing and proper crampon fitting
• Safe travel techniques in snow covered or mixed terrain
• Ice axe belay techniques
• When to transition to crampons
• Various crampon techniques
• Ice axe self arrest
•An emphasis on (LNT) Leave no
trace – stewardship practices in the outdoor environment
Duration:
This is a full day program expect approximately an 8 hour day plus driving
Prerequisites:
• No prior training is necessary
• Good physical condition able to engage in moderate activities outdoors for
hours.
